Design Winner Interviews

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I'm Natalie and I'll be graduating this year! I transferred to CPP last year from my Community College down in San Diego, and somehow managed to survive this long. Aside from the fashion industry, I also have a passion for and am heavily-involved in the music industry, which powers much of my inspiration when it comes to art and creativity.

Why did you choose to participate in our Women’s - Empowerment themed design contest?

I am all about the rise of women empowerment, and I think it’s great to celebrate it! I use creative outlets to help myself wind down and relax when I’m feeling stressed, so this contest provided just that.

Where did you get the inspiration for your design?

I take a lot of inspiration from my life in the music industry. One of my favorite genres is metal, so of course, that is where the “devil horns” hand sign came from. Being in the heavy music scene, there also is a noticeable lack of women at shows a lot of the time. It is changing, but it is still a very male-dominated industry. And even when there are a lot of women present, it is more often than not that I will get some kind of condescending or objectifying questions/comments asked of me. I wanted to take that symbolism and make it feminine. The same goes for the female symbol tattoo on the hand’s wrist. Traditionally, tattoos have been seen as “unprofessional” or “not ladylike”, so I wanted to include that somewhere within the art as well. For the fingernails, I chose red because in color theory, red is reflective of power, determination, strength, and passion, some qualities I think many women and woman-identifying individuals are finding within themselves in our modern times. And of course, everyone loves flowers, right? It just needed flowers.

What are some of your future goals?

A main goal right now is to survive this semester, that would be nice. After graduation, though, I am just hopeful to find a career where my skills are utilized and I’m happy. And also, like, making enough money to survive out here and provide for the cat child I hope to adopt once I find that career.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m Martin and I'm a dancer, music editor and graphic designer in my 3rd year at Cal Poly.

Why did you choose to participate in our Women’s Empowerment themed design contest?

I chose to participate in the Women’s Empowerment-themed design contest because I reached a certain level of understanding how important it is to support one another.  We are at a point in humanity where turmoil is present on a regular basis and I felt like it was important to make a statement.

Where did you get the inspiration for your design?

I wanted to stray away from the typical direction like using Rosie the Riveter or talk about “girl power” by actually talking about how we can combat problems within the female population today, which is lack of togetherness.  “All for One” represents the idea that all types of women, regardless of color, shape and faith, can break through stereotypes and promote positivity from now until forever.

What are some of your future goals?

Some of my future goals are to graduate college, acquire a job as a visual merchandiser or marketing director and eventually open my own store.
